We've seen examples of protagonism throughout human history. Across time Protagonists have influenced the world in a positive way. From revolutionaries like Abbie Hoffman to politicians like John F. Kennedy, activists like Martin Luther King Jr. to inventors like Nikola Tesla, musicians like John Lennon to philosophers like Guy Debord and criminals like John Dillinger to writers like George Orwell. One could go on and on listing these admirable human beings and their achievements. These people have in common their drive to do what they can to better the world for everyone. They fought for what they believed in and worked hard to accomplish their goals for the good of humanity. The motivations that drove these Protagonists should become that of our own.
What makes one a Protagonist and why SHOULD our motivations be modeled after them? Protagonists keeps their awareness about their community and the world that they live in. They pay attention to injustice and they stand against it. Protagonists are human and far from perfect, but they are not lazy or apathetic. Each of us individually and the entire world could benefit if we all paid attention to what was happening around us, with the right amount of thought and action we can stop a fascist regime before it can even get off the ground, we can eventually spot injustice in its beginning stages and put a stop to it. Somewhere on this planet someone is being tortured to death, someone is starving, someone is not being allowed their right to speak, someone is being punished unjustly, surely we can all agree that this is cause for concern. Any dictionary will give you a general definition of a Protagonist as “The leading character in a story or literary work”. We are the leading characters in our own stories; we might as well make them good ones. Protagonists, are passionate and active, live each day to create new things and change the things they know to be wrong. They strive to educate and better themselves so that they can better teach and help others. They challenge social norms and constantly revolutionize life on Spaceship Earth. Doesn't that sound like more of an interesting plot for yourself as a Protagonist than “The story of a person who spent an accumulated 60 years of their life watching a rapidly-changing-picture-machine called a television”?
The key to being a Protagonist is to care about something and take action.
Most anyone can tell that there's something not right with the world today.
The ones with the money own the media, which influence our opinions, desires
and knowledge of world affairs. Our flow of information is controlled by those
who view us as commodities. The ones with the most guns tell everyone else what
to do, and money that should be spent on a better (and redesigned) education
system, or homes for the homeless, or food for the hungry, is more often spent
on military. The ones in power often don't want significant social change, rather,
they want more power. We need all the help we can get against these forces.
We need artists to change how we perceive the world, we need philosophers to
make free thought an interesting past-time again, we need musicians to compose
songs of the revolution, to inspire others, we need teachers and thinkers and
inventors to help devise a completely new system better than anything humanity
has ever devised, so that we may live in harmonious balance. Become a Protagonist
today, and find your place in the grand scheme of things.
